ON AND OFF THE BEATEN PATH :: A Little Something From the Desert

Bartender Matt Nelson at Papago Brewing Co.

I was in the mood for something a little different, so I went to Papago Brewing in Scottsdale, my go-to source for beer. It has a constantly rotating beer selection of 32 beers on tap, so I’m never disappointed. This day was no exception.

After looking at the list, I went with Widmer Brothers Rotator IPA: O’Ryely IPA and I paired it with one of their a Papago Pies: Thai Chicken Pizza. The IPA was incredible. The aroma was fruity, which also translated straight to the mouth feel. At 50 IBUs, I didn’t get that very bitter aftertaste (even though it’s there), probably because of the level of caramel malt and rye. The ABV was a respectable 6.4%.

The pizza paired perfectly with this brew. The Thai Chicken Pizza had a thin crust with white meat chicken, red onions, fresh cilantro and was covered in Thai peanut sauce and mozzarella cheese. The O’Ryely was just the beer to attack the spiciness of the peanut sauce. I’m finding that I like the thin crust better. You don’t get as full and you can experience all the flavors of the pizza without choking down a whole lot of dough.

Great pairing—one that I would likely do again!
